Dr Ben Maher qualified from the University of Southampton in 2003 with prizes in Surgery and Emergency Medicine. After teaching anatomy at the University of Cambridge, he undertook surgical training in New Zealand and Manchester becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2007. Appointed to run through higher surgical training in the Northwest, he was a General and Vascular surgical registrar for several years before pursuing a career in Interventional Radiology.
Ben undertook Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Training in the Wessex region, before completing specialist fellowships in Vascular and Oncological Interventional Radiology at University Hospital Southampton, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He was awarded the British Society of Interventional Radiology Scholarship Prize and the Terumo Interventional Scholarship Prize. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists and is dual accredited in both Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.
Ben was appointed as a Consultant at University Hospital Southampton in 2017. His varied practice includes vascular, urological, gynaecological and oncological procedures. In Canada he was extensively involved in the treatment of venous disease including deep venous recanalisation and pelvic venous congestion and he has sought to progress these skills in the UK. His vascular practice encompasses arterial and venous disease, and he has developed an interest in endovascular treatment of varicose veins. Ben believes that The Whiteley Protocol offers the optimum care for patients with venous disease.
Dr Maher is actively involved in research. He enjoys teaching medical students, doctors in training and allied health care professionals.
Outside of work, Ben has a busy family life, being a father of three young children. He enjoys playing sport and travelling whenever he gets a chance.
