Many people get confused between varicose veins, thread veins, “hidden varicose veins“, phlebitis, venous eczema, pelvic congestion syndrome and a whole host of other vein problems.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, reduced mobility and exercise can exacerbate or even cause some venous conditions.

Although many people think that varicose veins are “only cosmetic” this is not always true. There are several conditions that are urgent if not emergencies such as:

In addition, there are now a host of new treatments. Whereas many people will know about radiofrequency and endovenous laser, few people know about the latest techniques.

These include endovenous microwave (as popularised by DJ Chris Evans) as well as the revolutionary new HIFU Echotherapy (Sonovein) treatment. Both were introduced into the UK by Prof Mark Whiteley and his team. They are currently exclusively available in the UK at The Whiteley Clinic.

HIFU Echotherapy (Sonovein) treatment of varicose veins

HIFU is an outpatient treatment that does not even need an operating theatre!

The treatment device is placed on the skin. Ultrasound passes through the leg tissue, focused onto the source of the varicose veins, permanently treating the problem veins.

In this time of concern about infections, this sort of totally non-invasive treatment is becoming very popular in many aspects of medicine.
