The Whiteley Protocol®

by

The Whiteley Protocol® is an ever evolving method of providing the optimal investigations and treatments for abnormal veins of the legs and / or pelvis.

The Whiteley Protocol® includes the investigation and optimal treatment of:

  • Varicose veins
  • Thread veins of the legs
  • Phlebitis (superficial thrombophlebitis)
  • Venous eczema
  • Swollen ankles (due to venous causes)
  • Venous leg ulcers
  • Brown stains around the ankles (haemosiderin)
  • Vulval and vaginal varicose veins
  • Pelvic venous congestion
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Venous abnormalities of the leg (such as Klippel-Trelawney syndrome and others)

The 3 Stages of The Whiteley Protocol®

STAGE 1
Medical

Identify and correct the underlying problem

Successful treatment starts with finding out what is causing the disturbance of the blood flow and then correcting the underlying problem in order to get the venous blood to flow correctly again. Depending on the exact nature of your veins and your own wishes, possible treatments include:

  • Echotherapy (SONOVEIN® HD)
  • Endovenous Microwave Ablation (EMWA)
  • Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA & EVLT™)
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
  • Glue (ie: Venaseal™)
  • MOCA™ (Clarivein™)
  • Closure of perforators (TRLOP)
  • Phlebectomies
  • Pelvic Vein Embolisation

Bandage for 12 hours
Stockings for 3 days
STAGE 2
Completing medical and prevention

Finishing the medical treatment and reducing future risks

Once the underlying problem has been fixed and the venous blood flow to the leg(s) has been restored, there are usually several abnormal veins that remain from the years of damage caused by the underlying vein problem. The Whiteley Clinic audits have shown that not addressing these remaining problems, leads to a much higher risk of further vein problems occurring – often within a year or less.Treatment in Stage 2 is usually ultrasound guided Foam Sclerotherapy.

The finishing touches

Once the venous blood flow has been restored to normal and all of the underlying vein problems have been treated, the green reticular veins and red, purple and blue thread veins can then be treated with the highest chance of success using Microsclerotherapy. This may require several sessions for required results.

How The Whiteley Protocol® was developed

The Whiteley Protocol® was developed by Prof Mark Whiteley (Consultant Venous Surgeon and Consultant Phlebologist) and Judy Holdstock (Senior Vascular Scientist) of The Whiteley Clinic. The first Whiteley Protocol® was produced in 1999. However since then, we are continually updating it on the basis of our research and audit results, research from other experts around the world and taking into account new technologies and inventions that are continually appearing.
