Microsclerotherapy is a precise treatment for thread veins or spider veins in the legs and other parts of the body that are below the heart. A special solution called a sclerosant is injected into these veins using a very fine needle. This solution damages the vein wall, stops blood flow, and over time the vein closes and gradually disappears. It is a safe, minimally invasive procedure for removing visible surface veins.
Ideal candidates are individuals with thread or spider veins in the legs or body that are below the heart. Before treatment, a venous duplex ultrasound scan is essential to check for any hidden or underlying varicose veins that may be feeding the surface veins. Treating these underlying veins is crucial for achieving successful results. This treatment is generally not suitable for facial veins, which are better treated with laser, IPL, or electro-surgery.
First, any underlying vein issues are identified and treated if needed. The thread veins are then treated by injecting sclerosant with a very fine needle. Because these veins are tiny, a strong magnifying glass and bright light are used for accuracy. Once injected, the veins are immediately compressed to keep the blood out and help the sclerosant work effectively. A compression stocking or bandage is applied after the procedure and must be worn consistently to achieve the best results. Initial improvements can be seen within a few weeks, but full results are usually visible after 2 to 3 months, and in some cases, veins may continue to disappear for up to a year.

Possible side effects include brown staining if compression stockings are removed too soon, very rarely ulcers if sclerosant enters a microscopic artery, and red marks known as Telangiectatic Matting, particularly if underlying veins have not been treated.
