Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

by

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Excessive sweating is clinically known as Hyperhidrosis. It is the excessive production of watery sweat. This sweat causes the damp patches that can often be seen on clothes. This sweat is produced by the Eccrine glands and its main purpose is to cool the body.

Hyperhidrosis is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system. Other factors such as heat, hormones, drugs and some foods may also influence it.

It is a relatively common issue and is thought to affect between one and three people in every 100. It can develop at any age although typically starts during childhood.

miraDry for underarm sweating

miraDry is a very good treatment option to consider if you suffer from excessive underarm sweating. It is the only procedure that can provide permanent results without resorting to surgery.

Who is suitable for the treatment?

Most people who suffer with excessive sweating are suitable for the miraDry® treatment. You will need to have a consultation prior to any treatment taking place. Details of your medical history will be discussed and the extent of your sweating will be measured.

Those with a heart pacemaker or other electronic device are unable to have the treatment. Other contra-indications will be discussed with you during your consultation.

What results can be expected?

After the miraDry® treatment, reduction in sweating is immediate and dramatic. In clinical trials, patients experienced an average of 82% reduction in sweat.

For most patients, one or two treatments with miraDry® will result in a permanent reduction in sweating. As the sweat glands are eliminated, they do not grow back so the sweating does not return.

For patients who have had temporary treatments such as sweat reduction injections, miraDry® is a more permanent solution.

To treat both underarms during one session usually takes between 60 to 90 minutes.

There will be an immediate reduction in sweating post treatment. There will be swelling and redness in the treated area for a few days to a few weeks. To minimise this swelling and discomfort, patients are advised to repeatedly ice the treated area and we will provide you with ice-packs to do this.

The treated area must be keep clean. You may wash with water and a gentle liquid soap. Loose fitting tops are suggested and rigorous activity should be avoided for a few days post procedure.

Are there any side effects?

There are very few side effects with the miraDry® system. The procedure is quick and there is minimal pain and downtime post-treatment. It is not uncommon to have some minor bruising, discomfort and swelling but these are generally short lived.
