2nd Prize Certificate from the AVLS in November 2019
This weekend, Prof Mark Whiteley presented Sonovein varicose veins treatment at the AVLS. This presentation won second prize in the “International Presentations” category.
Sonovein® is made by a company called Theraclion. It is a completely non-invasive way of treating varicose veins.
Sonovein® uses HIFU. HIFU stands for “High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound”.
Basically, when using Sonovein®, a doctor can see the varicose vein that needs treating by using ultrasound. Using computer guidance, a beam of ultrasound can then be focused on the vein.
This beam of ultrasound travels through the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It doesn’t cause any damage whatsoever. The HIFU only generates heat at the focal point of the beam. Due to the precision of Sonovein®, individual varicose veins are treated without damaging any surrounding structures.

The American Vein and Lymphatic Society (AVLS) used to be called the American College of Phlebology (ACP).
It is one of the biggest venous societies in the world. The annual general meeting occurs each November. This year, the meeting took place in Phoenix Arizona.
Specialists in venous surgery from all around the world presented their latest findings and studies at this meeting.
Because Sonovein uses HIFU, it is completely non-invasive.
Conclusion of the prize-winning talk on HIFU Echotherapy treatment of Varicose Veins using Sonovein
Research from The Whiteley Clinic, presented at the AVLS, shows excellent early results from this new technique. Successful treatment of the veins has shown to be at least as good as any other treatment.
As no catheters are pushed into the veins, there is very little bruising. Hence patients are back to normal mobility immediately.
There is no need for any anticoagulation. The conclusion of the prize-winning talk is that Sonovein appears to be a “game-changing” technology in the treatment of varicose veins.
The Whiteley Clinic introduced Sonovein into the UK in May 2019. Prof Obermeyer performed the first 50 research treatments. However, The Whiteley Clinic performed the first commercial treatments in the world.
As with all new techniques, we are continuing to modify treatments as experience shows us what patients like best.
Although some people have Sonovein alone, we have found combining Sonovein and other simple treatments such as foam sclerotherapy, to be highly effective.
The Whiteley Clinic continues to be pioneering in the field of venous surgery, continually striving to bring the best treatments to patients treated there.
