Professor Mark Whiteley is a guest at the varicose veins workshop in Timisoara, Romania this week. The XIIIth Romanian Congress of Phlebology, organised by assistant Prof Sorin Olariu, runs from 2-4 th October. However on the 1st October, a special workshop with live operating was held.
The day started with a morning of lectures about varicose veins and venous disease (see below). Mark Whiteley explained bout research from The Whiteley Clinic and the University of Surrey into the best treatments for varicose veins.
He showed research showing how EVLT works so well for large varicose veins and Foam sclerotherapy for small veins – and how they work well when used in combination.
Lunch was held, allowing all delegates to discuss varicose veins treatments and investigations.
In the afternoon, Prof Mark Whiteley then operated live on 2 patients. He performed EVLT (endovenous laser) withe the Angiodynamics Venacure system on 2 patients. He also performed ambulatory phlebectomies and, one one, a TRLOP procedure to close a large perforator vein.
Being under local anaesthetic, both patients recovered immediately and walked out of the theatre.
During the workshop, Assoc Prof Alina Fratila also performed radiofrequency ablation on 2 patient and Prof Sorin Olariu demonstrated cryostripping on 2 more patients.
Following on from the success of the workshop, the conference proper will start on 2nd October.
Prof Mark Whiteley will give a guest lecture at the start of the conference and will perform 2 more cases of EVLT. These will be transmitted live to the conference for all delegates to see.
